DOP / Director of Photography · Art Director
Fashion and portrait photographer with nearly four decades of international cover work. Former cover photographer for Glamour US (Condé Nast) and Marie Claire UK; published in ELLE France, Casa Vogue Italia, Vogue Japan. Founder of Hiromasa Portrait Studio, Tokyo.
“Lately I feel all my photography converges on portraiture.” — Hiromasa Sasaki
Hiromasa Sasaki studied abroad in Minnesota as a high-school student, graduated from Sophia University in Comparative Culture in 1980, then moved to New York to study fashion photography at FIT. He debuted in French ELLE in 1987 and has since worked as a fashion and beauty photographer out of New York and Paris, known for an elegant, translucent visual style.
In 1993 he signed a cover contract with Condé Nast's Glamour US — his September 1992 cover with Bridget Moynahan was later selected as one of "20 of the Best Glamour Covers of All Time" (in an era when US Glamour sold 2.7 million copies per month). A 1994 cover contract with Marie Claire UK followed.
His editorial and book work spans Casa Vogue Italia (Black Japan, Unexpected Praha 60's, Japan is Blossoming), Public Space (edited by Akutagawa-winning novelist Keiichiro Hirano), Flowers / Daniel Ost, the portrait series Elegant People, and the Tokyo Punk collaboration with Kamo Head — which was nominated for Metropolitan Museum participation.
In 2021 Sasaki launched Hiromasa Portrait Studio in Tokyo, continuing celebrity portraiture with subjects including Yayako & Kyara Uchida, Mikimoto, and Vogue Japan. He also teaches master classes at Yamano Beauty College as part of a commitment to mentoring the next generation.
